ABOUT PAPA

Join us for a special lei wili workshop with beloved master lei maker, Uncle Bill Char. In this hands-on experience, participants will learn the art and meaning of lei wili (twined lei making). Uncle Bill will share techniques and tips passed down through generations, guiding attendees step-by-step through the process of selecting, preparing, and wili foliage and flowers. More than just a craft class, this workshop is an opportunity to slow down, connect with ʻike kūpuna, and create something meaningful with your own hands.

All materials will be provided, and all skill levels are welcome. Come ready to learn, talk story, and leave with a lei you made with intention and aloha.

ABOUT BILL CHAR

William “Bill” Char is a highly respected master lei maker with more than 50 years of experience, known for helping elevate lei making as a recognized art form in Hawaiʻi. A key figure during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s, he learned from family elders and esteemed kumu hula, later gaining recognition at major cultural events such as the Merrie Monarch Festival, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and the Festival of Pacific Arts. Encouraged by Paleka Mattos to value his work professionally, Char went on to become one of Hawaiʻi’s leading lei artists, creating thousands of high-quality lei rooted in tradition and cultural storytelling.
