ABOUT THE BOOK

The Adventures of Eva and Duke: Surfing with Pop Pop / Nā Huakaʻi a Eva lauā ʻo Duke: Ka Heʻenalu ʻana me Pop Pop, a bilingual, multi-sensory book for children ages 3–9, was officially released on June 23, 2025, as a celebration of Carleen’s enduring legacy of aloha, cultural pride, and family connection. In a collaborative project with her daughter Tara, they saw the lack of resources in the Hawaiian language for children who were visually impaired and disabled. Given that Taraʻs children were both blind and learning braille, she wanted to teach her students Hawaiian but saw the lack of resources, thus the books were created.

Written in both Hawaiian, English and provides Hawaiian braille and English braille, along with audio capabilities to listen to the story, this beautifully crafted story follows a young girl named Eva and her brother Duke as they ride their very first waves with their grandfather, Pop Pop and encounter animals on their adventure. Through the lens of this joyful ocean adventure, readers are immersed in Hawaiian words of animals, the beauty of intergenerational bonds, and the power of place-based storytelling.
