ABOUT THE KUMU

Born and raised in Napoʻopoʻo, South Kona, Bill Keoua Nelsen descends from generations of lauhala weavers in Kona. Inspired by his grandmother, Lilian Alepoki Grace Nelsen, and guided by master weavers including Aunty Gladys Grace, Aunty Gwen Kamisugi, and Pohaku Kahoʻohanohano, Keoua has dedicated himself to preserving and teaching the art of lauhala weaving. His work reflects a deep connection to his kūpuna and Hawaiian traditions, blending ancestral knowledge with contemporary expression. Keoua’s creations have been featured in the MAMo Wearable Arts Show, Bishop Museum’s Ola Ka Noʻeau exhibition, and international venues in Japan, San Francisco, and Chicago. Today, he continues to share and teach lauhala weaving locally and abroad, fulfilling his promise to perpetuate this treasured Hawaiian art form.
