(1034 Kawaiahaʻo Street Honolulu, HI 96814)
Join us for a panel discussion & a special screening of Mālama Mākua, a powerful short film that explores the deep connection between the Hawaiian community and the sacred lands of Mākua Valley. Through stunning visuals and heartfelt storytelling, the film highlights the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve this wahi pana (sacred place) for future generations.
Engage in a panel discussion & a Q&A with some of the cast & community advocates who continue to champion the mission of Mālama Mākua. Together, we’ll reflect on the film’s message, the history of Mākua, and the collective responsibility to uphold our cultural and environmental stewardship. Participating panelist include Kanaʻi Dodge, Lynette Cruz, Mikey Inouye & Sparky Rodrigues.
ABOUT THE FILM
Featured during the 2025 HIFF (Hawaiʻi International Film Festival) Mālama Mākua traces the valley's transformation from a place of deep cultural roots to a rallying point for grassroots activism. A film 30 years in the making, chronicles the ongoing struggle to restore U.S. military-occupied lands to Native Hawaiian stewardship, connecting this local fight to global movements for peace, demilitarization, and envrionmental justice. With the U.S. government's lease set to expire in 2029, the call for Mākua's return grows more urgent—and more hopeful—than ever.
