ABOUT PAPA
Join hulu (feather) master, Kawika Lum-Nelmida, for a hands-on Lei Hulu Making Class where you'll learn the ancient Hawaiian art of crafting lei hulu humupapa (feathered lei)! In this fun and creative class, you'll be guided through the entire process, from selecting and preparing vibrant pheasant feathers to assembling them to create your own lei hulu. Lum-Nelmida will share tips, techniques, and cultural insights that will deepen your knowledge for this unique art form.
Lei Humupapa is a style of Hawaiian feather work that involves a “flat stitch” technique of hand-sewing feathers to a flat base surface. Hat bands are primary examples of this style of lei hulu. Lei Humupapa are a more contemporary form of lei hulu.
